Admission Arrangements for Essa Academy
We are delighted you are considering applying for a place at our academy for your child.
Admissions to Year 7
The Essa Foundation Academies Trust is the admissions authority for our academy: Bolton MBC coordinates admission applications on behalf of the Trust.

In brief EFAT’s admissions policy for Essa Academy and oversubscription criteria are:
- All children will be admitted if there are sufficient places available.
- Children with a statement of special educational need or an Education, Health and Care plan, naming the academy will be admitted.
- If there are insufficient places available priority will be given to:
- Looked after children (children in public care), or have been
- Other children deemed vulnerable
- Children with a sibling attending Essa Primary Academy or Essa Academy
- Children with a proven medical or social need
- Children who live nearest to the academy
- Tie breaker- geographical proximity to the academy
The number of place available in each Year group at Essa Academy is 180.
Arrangements, and the timetable, for normal time admission to Essa Academy i.e. admissions to Year 7 in September 2018 are:
By 12th September* 2017 Bolton MBC publishes a composite prospectus of all state funded school places in Bolton.
By 31st October* 2017 Closing date for secondary school applications.
By 1st January* 2018 Bolton MBC publishes arrangements for co-ordinating all admissions in Bolton.
On 1st March*2018 (* Or next working day) Offers of places will be posted out to parents/carers.
End of March 2018 Last date for appeals to be lodged, which will be held in the first round of appeals.
Appeals lodged after this date may be heard later in June/July.
March - Autumn 2018 Children not receiving priority place - Automatically added to school waiting list.
End of April/May/June 2018 School appeals heard.
If you are refused a place at Essa Academy you can submit an appeal to an independent appeals panel. Parents usually have 14 days of receipt of the letter to make an appeal. You will be sent an appeal form with the letter which informs you that you have not been given a place for your child. A full explanation of the appeal process will be included in the letter. You should complete and return the appeal form to Bolton Council. The Council arranges appeals for places at Essa Academy on behalf of the Trust. An appeal date will be arranged within 40 days of your appeal being lodged and you will be able to attend in person to make your case.

Admissions at other times
If you are new to the area or for some other reason you are seeking a place at our academy at a time other than the normal application time for admission you should obtain and complete and return an In Year Admission form to Bolton Council.

Admissions outside of the normal age range
Parents may seek a place for their child outside of their normal age group, for example, if the child is gifted and talented or has experienced problems such as ill health. Full details of the Trust’s arrangements for considering such requests are included in the admissions policy. There is no right of appeal if this is refused.
